Appreciation Sunday was a glorious celebration of music and faithfulness.  God has truly blessed us with wonderful musicians and dedicated Sunday School staff.  The church staff very happily has gifted the membership with a “Eucharistic” tree which will be planted on the church grounds very soon.  Look for it as a reminder of our spirit of gratitude and love as God’s family in this place!

SPECIAL REMINDER — Worship hours change during the summer.  Beginning June 4, our Sunday morning worship will start at 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM.  This change allows worshippers more time to enjoy the activities of summer and helps us in dealing with the heat during services.  These hours will be observed through Labor day.  We will return to regular worship hours on September 10.

Summer Vespers begin Monday, June 5 at 7:30 PM . . . a worship alternative for those whose Sunday mornings find them involved in other activities or endeavors or for those who enjoy a more informal service.  Holy Communion will be celebrated the last Monday of the month.

Summer Sunday School begins on June 4 during the 10 AM service.  We are in great need of volunteers to lead on Sundays throughout the summer.  Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board and you can sign up once or more as you’d like.  For those that volunteer to lead, all supplies are prepped and ready to go for you to guide our children through the summer Sunday School experience.

The Deacon District Picnics are back!  Due to wonderful responses over the years, the Deacons will  continue their tradition of fellowship picnics at the parsonage.  The dates which have been designated  are June 27, 28 and 29.

You will be receiving a letter inviting you to your district gathering, but if you cannot attend on your designated date you are encouraged to join us on another date.  Picnics are potluck, with us providing hamburgers and hot dogs and they begin at 6:30 PM.  Water balloon participation is optional!  Come, relax and have fun and fellowship with your church family.  Please call the church office if you plan on attending—708/448-4170.  Thanks!

Congratulations to all of our High School Graduates.  We will be recognizing each of you at the 8:30 and 10:00 services on June 4 and presenting you with a small gift.  Please plan on attending one of these services.  If you are unable to attend a service on this day, please stop by the church office to pick up your gift.

Congratulations 8th Graders on your Confirmation and First Communion.  One of your new roles as an adult member of our church family is that you get to serve as acolytes.  This is an exciting and meaningful way for you to participate in the life of Good Shepherd.  There will be an acolyte training session on Sunday, June 11 at 9:30 AM.

Congratulations to Hunter Sweeney for completing his Eagle Project at Good ShepherdHunter helped refurbish, organize, and provide storage in the High School Youth Room (which is the old choir loft in the original sanctuary).  Hunter wanted his Eagle Project to make a difference for members of his church family and he has done just that.  Thank you Hunter!  Once all of the required paperwork is complete, Hunter should become an Eagle Scout this summer.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Garage Sale this year.  More than 60 volunteers helped with the sale this year, not to mention all the people who donated items. Over $11,600 was raised to help support our High School Mission Trip to Benton Harbor in June.  Without the help of our many volunteers, this sale wouldn’t have been possible.  So, whether you donated items, helped sort or price, picked-up furniture, cleaned, fixed, or folded items, cashiered, wrapped, carried, supplied treats for your fellow volunteers, helped pack-up, and everything in between, your help was greatly appreciated.  Thank you to everyone for your help.

Thank you to the 2016-2017 Sunday school Staff! We appreciate all the dedication and hard work you put towards Sunday school this past year.  The children greatly reflect all of your efforts!

…the members of the Youth and Education Committee for putting together such a wonderful luncheon for the Sunday school staff.

The Palos Pantry has a large number of families requesting food.  The Good Shepherd family continues to help with much needed donations.  While any food item is ALWAYS appreciated, special requests for June include:  tuna, canned meats, rice and noodle dinners, jello, baby food and crackers.  Personal size toiletries are always welcome.  Sincere thanks for your ongoing support.

Homeless Cooking is reaching out to those less fortunate!  The next cooking for the homeless is Tuesday, June 13 at 9:30 AM.

Our Tuesday Groups wrap up another year of faithful growth and discussion with a closing service and luncheon on June 6 at 11:00 AM.  All participants are encouraged to celebrate our call to grow in our understanding of God’s word as God’s family in this place.

Tuesday afternoons offer a nice time to gather and explore God’s work in our own lives and the lives of others. This group, open to anyone, just started reading, Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say by Adam Hamilton. Feel free to come even if you’ve not read the book. Contact Chris Buresh (448-4170 or chris@good-shepherd-church.com) for more information.  June 6 is our last class before the summer break.

Theology Pub is a relaxed gathering of people having conversation around the intersections of faith and practical life. No preparation is necessary. Come to listen and share your thoughts as the Spirit moves you. Our next gathering will be on June 13  at 7:00 PM at Hackney’s (12300 S. LaGrange in Palos Park). Contact Chris Buresh (448-4170 or chris@good-shepherd-church.com) for more information.

*PATIENCE PLEASE*  McCarthy Road from Harlem to LaGrange is being resurfaced.  We have been assured that access to church will not be hindered and look forward to completion of the project some time this month.  Thank you for your understanding!

“OFF” Club meets on June 21 this month for a fun get together of hot dogs and a movie.  We will also test your film knowledge with some questions about films, performers and interesting trivia about the entertainment genre...with prizes!  Then we'll move to Bethany Hall to enjoy our movie.  Come and join a welcoming group of ladies and gents who like food, fun and fellowship!  We start at 11 AM in the Family Life Center.

“Body and Soul,” the men’s group that includes time for recreation and reflection, has become a close group of support and friendship for men in our congregation.  The group meets in the summer for basketball only at 8:00 PM on Mondays.

Six Flags, here we come! All High School and Confirmation Students are invited to attend a day of fun at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, IL on Tuesday, July 18.  The cost for this trip is $25, which includes transportation and a ticket into the park (please note that group tickets no longer provide admission to Hurricane Harbor, so if you want to go to the waterpark, you will need to pay an additional fee). Please sign up on the bulletin board, or call Ron Skoglund at (708) 448-4170 to reserve your spot.  Any youth who has a season pass or another ticket is welcome to join our group for $5, to help cover the cost of our adult volunteers.  Adults are needed to drive our group to and from the park, so if you are willing to have a fun day with a group of young people, please see Ron.  All adults receive a free ticket as thanks for volunteering to spend the day with our group.  All Junior Choir Members who participated in the musical are invited to join us as well at no cost.  Please sign up on or before July 14, if possible, so the correct number of tickets can be ordered.

A meeting for all of the High School Mission Trip participants and their parents will be on Tuesday, June 13 at 7:00 PM.  At this meeting we will go through all of the specific details of our trip as well as turn in all forms.  If you cannot attend, please call Ron to schedule an individual meeting.
